Tip #1 – Discovery tours with HVV
The Hamburger Verkehrs Verbund (HVV) offers a good alternative to the typical harbor tour or a Hop On – Hop Off bus.
On the water
With ferry 62, you can travel from Landungsbrücken over the fish market, the docklands, and the museum harbor Övelgönne to the Elbe beach. With this route, you can plan your day perfectly. If you want to get from the Elbphilharmonie to Landungsbrücken also on the water, you can take the ferry 72.
Through the city
In addition to the ferry, there is the HVV Bus 111, which takes you from HafenCity to Platz der Republik in Altona every 20 minutes. You won’t miss any of Hamburg’s typical sights, because the bus passes the Speicherstadt, the Elphie, the Michel, the Reeperbahn and the fish market.
Tickets
The practical thing about both a ferry ride or a bus ride: you only have to pay once for a day ticket. The 9 o’clock day ticket costs 6,70€ and is valid from Mon – Fri from 0-6 o’clock and then from 9-6 o’clock on the following day. For more than 2 people, the 9 o’clock group ticket for 12.70 € is also worthwhile, which you can use with up to 5 people. Our colleague Zeyna recommends you buy the tickets for local transport via the HVV app, then they are even cheaper!

Tip #2 – Try Franzbrötchen
Franzbrötchen is a typical specialty from Hamburg. It is a sweet pastry filled with cinnamon and sugar. Here, of course, every Hamburg swears on the baker in confidence around the corner. Nevertheless, we have picked out two tips for you:
- Franz and Friends can be found in the Wandelhalle at the main train station, at the Sternschanze S-Bahn station, and on Holstenstr. in Altona. Here you can find not only the traditional Franzbrötchen filled with cinnamon and sugar but also fillings such as nougat, caramel, cherries, or pumpkin seeds. The cost of a Franzbrötchen here ranges from €0.95 to €1.25, depending on the filling.
- The kleine Konditorei already had the best Franzbrötchen in Hamburg on offer since 2015. The small delicacies are available here from €1.10, but you have to drive all the way to Eimsbüttel (Osterstr. 176, 20255 Hamburg, near the Lutterohtstraße stop) for this treat – what won’t you do for a good snack.
Tip #3 – Discover Hamburg by water
Stand – Up – Paddling (SUP)
For our colleague, Jasmine, SUP is one of the highlights in Hamburg. There are various tours through the canals and across the Alster, many of which are also suitable for beginners. Rental prices start at most providers at 13€ per hour per board. Most of the time you have to pay an extra per half hour. You can also ask for daily prices. If you are not sure how to use the SUP, you can also take a beginner’s course. The price of these courses is about 50€ for 2 hours of training.
Canoeing
Our colleague, Emilie also has a recommendation for all water rats among you: rent a canoe and paddle through the Mühlenkamp Canal. If your strength fails you, you can use the Paddle Thru at Peter Pane, where you can get burgers, fries and drinks brought directly to your boat.
Tip #4 – Explore the fish market
This may not necessarily be an insider tip, but a visit to the fish market is guaranteed worthwhile. From April to October, the fish market is open daily from 5:00 – 9:30, from November to March you can shop here from 7 o’clock. Every weekend the fish market attracts around 70,000 visitors to its stalls and not only will you find a variety of fish you can buy here, but also fruit, vegetables, and even plants. Live music also plays very often in the fish auction hall.
Due to the Corona measures in Hamburg, the fish market is unfortunately closed at the moment. Find out about the current developments best at the city itself.

Tip #5 – Fish sandwiches at Landungsbrücken
Along the Landungsbrücken towards the water side, you will find a lot of fish sandwich vendors. Usually, the stores that are good are the ones where the front has formed long queues. However, the wait is worth it, because here you get freshly caught maties rolls. If you don’t like that, you can also get a crab roll or baked fish in a bun. If fish is not your thing, you can of course also get French fries. You can watch ships while you eat, sounds like a plan, doesn’t it?
Tip #6 – Watch ships
A highlight in Hamburg is definitely ship watching. The following places are perfect for ship watching:
- Hamburg Cruise Center: Here you can perfectly marvel at cruise ships because the largest of their kind dock here. The sight is impressive in any case.
- Landungsbrücken: Once you’ve grabbed a fish sandwich, find a nice spot nearby to watch the big container ships go by. During big events, however, it gets very crowded here.
- Övelgönne: Sit here on the Elbe beach and enjoy the view. During the day you can watch both container and cruise ships passing by. By the way, the Elbe beach is really a sandy beach and in the summer it turns into a dreamlike place in the middle of the city.
- Altonaer Balkon: This spot is a bit out of the way, but an absolute insider tip to escape the crowds.
- Waltershofer Damm: Here there is a pedestrian bridge over the rails and the Elbe, from which you have the perfect view of container ships.

Tip #7 – Experience a musical
When there is no pandemic chaos, Hamburg is THE city for musicals. Of course, you can choose what you want to see. If you prefer something smaller and less expensive, we recommend a visit to Schmidt’s Tivoli on the Reeperbahn (price per person: about 20€). However, our colleague Zeyna recommends not to miss the crowd puller ‘The Lion King’, because you will remember this musical for a lifetime. Tickets for ‘The Lion King’ start at about 70€.
Tip #8 – Hamburg by night
Hamburg also has a lot to offer at night. The harbor and the Speicherstadt are illuminated at night and look very different. A visit to the Reeperbahn is also exciting in the evening hours, but usually very crowded. If you don’t feel like partying, St. Pauli also has a night market right on Spielbudenplatz.
Another tip from our colleague Emilie: The light show in Planten un Blomen in the summer. However, a visit to the park is worthwhile at any time of the year and day.

Tip #9 – Old Elbe tunnel
The old Elbe tunnel connects the Landungsbrücken with the port area in Steinwerder and is open for pedestrians and cyclists around the clock. The path through the tunnel is 426m long and as a destination, you can see the viewpoint in Steinwerder. From here you have a fantastic view of Hamburg and the harbor. However, the tunnel itself has a lot to offer with its old-fashioned lighting and wall decorations. It is also a popular photo motif for locals and tourists.
